Symbolic AI

At the core of Inbenta’s Technology

Our Customer Interaction Platform is powered by Symbolic AI, enabling it to maximize self-service automation, whilst minimizing training efforts.

What is Symbolic AI?

Symbolic AI trains Artificial Intelligence (AI) the same way a human brain learns. It uses internal symbolic representations of its “world” to learn meaning and context.

Symbols play a vital role in the human thought and reasoning process. We learn both objects and abstract concepts, then create rules for dealing with these concepts. These rules can be formalized in a way that captures everyday knowledge.

Symbolic AI mimics this mechanism and attempts to explicitly represent human knowledge through human-readable symbols and rules that enable the manipulation of those symbols. Symbolic AI entails embedding human knowledge and behavior rules into computer programs.

Differences between Inbenta Symbolic AI and machine learning

Inbenta Symbolic AI is used to power our patented and proprietary Natural Language Processing technology. These algorithms along with the accumulated lexical and semantic knowledge contained in the Inbenta Lexicon allow customers to obtain optimal results with minimal, or even no training data sets. This is a significant advantage to brute-force machine learning algorithms which often requires months to “train” and ongoing maintenance as new data sets, or utterances, are added.

Because it is a rule-based reasoning system, Symbolic AI also enables its developers to easily visualize the logic behind its decisions. In case of a problem, developers can follow its behavior line by line and investigate errors down to the machine instruction where they occurred. This logic can then be analyzed and troubleshot if needed.
