OpenAI Fast-Tracks ChatGPT AI Agent Phone for 2027
OpenAI is working on a smartphone — a significant reversal from previous reports — and is fast-tracking its first "AI agent phone," with mass production targeted as early as the first half of 2027, according to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Drivers behind the accelerated timeline reportedly include OpenAI's planned initial public offering and intensifying competition in AI agent phones. The device would use a customized MediaTek Dimensity 9600 built on TSMC's N2P node, featuring an upgraded image signal processor for enhanced HDR, a dual-NPU architecture, LPDDR6 memory, and UFS 5.0 storage. Luxshare Precision Industry is named as the exclusive manufacturing partner. Instead of apps, the smartphone could rely on AI agents to complete tasks — bypassing the restrictions Apple and Google currently impose on system access. Kuo argues that fully controlling both the operating system and hardware is the only way for OpenAI to deliver a comprehensive AI agent service, projecting combined 2027–2028 shipments of around 30 million units. OpenAI has not publicly confirmed the device.
