A natural language is a language used as a means of everyday communication among humans, and distinguished from formal or artificially constructed languages. English, Spanish, Catalan or Chinese are examples of natural languages.

A major challenge for computer science is the development of computers which are able to understand natural language. To cope with this, there is a whole field within computer science concerned with the interactions between computers and human (natural) languages: Natural Language Processing (NLP).
